Tale of Many Gamers - Day 1

Saturday saw the first match-up for our Tale of Many Gamers campaign.
We showed up at Fan Quest (our FLGS) with the intent of running a few demos/answering questions for new players that may be hanging around.  The turn out was pretty great, and I think we may have coaxed a few new players into the hobby. Never a bad thing if you ask me!

When it came time to put our new armies on the table, I was impressed all-around.
My Wolves came out better than I expected them to (pics coming soon!).
JD's Eldar are GORGEOUS. He converted them over from WHFB High Elves and Archers.
And Ron's Dark Eldar are nothing to be scoffed at. Beautiful paint jobs across the board.
I'll see if I cant get a couple of pictures of their armies.

My match-up against the DE was short and sweet.
I took a 10-man Grey Hunter pack (2 Plasma, MotW, and Power Weapon), a 7-man Pack (Meltagun, MotW, Power Fist, Drop Pod) and a Rune Priest (Chooser) with Living Lightning and JotWW.

I don't know much about DE units, but He brought a boat full of Wytches, and a 10-man (woman?) squad of rifles. There was a Succubus tucked in with the Wytches. I may be leaving something out, but again, I don't know anything about DE units ( only that wytches scare me, lol)
I rolled up first turn, and dropped my pod in right in front of his rifle squad, only 2 inches off target.
My rune priest (thanks to Chooser) was able to pop the Wytchboat with a little Living Lightning right away. They are a bit less intimidating when you force them to walk...but only a bit.
The drop pod squad shot with pistols and charged in to the rifle squad, killing a few, losing no one, and driving them off the table.  Not a bad 1st turn I'd say.
The game ended fairly quickly thereafter. The DE ended up just off of their objective by the end and it was called as a victory for the Sons of Russ.

All in all I have no complaints with my list.  I'm dying to throw in some Sniper scouts for that added ranged Anti-infantry power.

Traitors

The war seems endless. After millenia of fighting, the carnage in insurmountable. Who's side am I on? What am I fighting for? Common questions in a war that has waged for so long. It might be time to switch sides...

Tonight I am starting the process of converting my IG (yes all 6500 pts of them) to traitors. After being a loyalist for so long, (and admitedly, after reading so many stories about Traitors in the Space Wolf novels) my guardsmen have decided to defect.
Granted most of the work will simply be new paintjobs for the humans, but veterans and sergeants will be getting the full mutie' makeover. I have a handful of Zombie heads from the fantasy range that should work nicely for a squad a warp-time veterans (or nurgle loyal vets, we'll see).
Planning on doing the ol' Beastman heads for some Khornate loyalist vets as well.
The biggest hurdle to cross is going to be colour scheme. While the veterans will be doing their own things, the platoon(s) will be sticking to a colour scheme.
So far I'm thinking a dirty yellow for the cloth, and a dark grey for armor. In my head this sounds cool...but who knows until the test model is done right?

I will post some pictures this weekend as the work begins.

Leafblower Cirtique - YTTH Article

As an IG player, I have really been wondering about all this "leafblower" business.
Anytime I have actually taken a look at the list, or the reports from people using it, I'm baffled by it. It doesnt make any sense to me. It feels like you are wasting a TON of points just to get a mediocre army. THere's none of the usual IG armor spam, and a fairly limited amount of scoring units on the board. Not to mention what seems to a be a really hit-or-miss, inflexible play style.
But don't just take my word for it. Stelek over at Yesthetruthhurts.com wrote up a full critique that, love it or hate it, makes for a great read.

Space Wolves vs Orks, 500pts "Coming in Hot"

So this past week has seen a TON of test games for my new Space Wolves.
After playing IG for so long, it has taken some serious getting used to. I was given many a sound thrashing from my brother's Orks over the week (6 or 7 losses in a row, yikes!).
I have been meaning to do a batrep so I'll give it a shot now, from memory. No pictures unfortunately this time as the camera is out of commission.
So I have tweaked the original list, and gave it a run last night. The results? Well see for yourself!

Space Wolves Painting - Part 2

After my last painting update, I had just gotten the armor color to a place I was happy with. So I had 22 wolves with no details. Well the past couple days have had me working out the specifics on some colors, and I'm ready to show off those same models, finished. (Still not based, don't get too excited)
So, without further ado:

Space Wolves 500pts - ToMG list

In the interest of starting a new Space Wolf army, I am joining my local gaming group in playing through a "Tale of Many Gamers"-style campaign. The idea is that we start out with 500 pts and in each round increase that volume with the goal of eventually collecting 2500 pts of our chosen army.

So for round one, I had to come up with a 500 pt Space Wolves roster with an FOC consisting of only 2 Troop choices and one HQ choice.  I will admit, not a difficult task.

HQ -
Rune Priest

TROOPS -
10x Grey Hunters
     - 2x Plasma Gun
     - Mark of the Wulfen
     - Power Weapon
     - Wolf Standard

10x Grey Hunters
     - 2x Plasma Gun
     - Mark of the Wulfen
     - Power Weapon
     - Wolf Standard

That's it!
After a couple test-plays (against Eldar, Orks, and Chaos Marines) they've gone 4-1.
At this points level, that Rune Priest is practically cheating! With his 24" nullify range (4+) he completely pulls the rug out from under the Eldar's Doom and Guide, etc. And Jaws in a 500pt game can leave just about anyone flat on their back.  All in all I'm quite satisfied!
What's next on the list? Let's find out!

Painting the Wolves

As promised, here are some in-progress shots of my new Grey Hunters.
There is still a lot missing, as I am waiting to get a couple of pots for the detailing. (Dwarf Bronze in particular)
Anyhow... Check them out, and stay tuned!

Welcome to the Fang

My gaming group is running an event at our FLGS similar to the old "Tale of Many Gamers" campaign of White Dwarf heraldry.
The idea is, over the course of time we will be playing games of increasing size, while building/painting a new army/force.  We are trying to encourage some new players to get involved, so to start things out we need 500 pts painted up and ready to play (with themed objective marker) by May 28th.
We are hoping that starting small will not only encourage people to jump in, but pose a challenge to our veterans as we typically play larger games.

I figured this event would be the perfect to finally start my Space Wolves army.

Slim Pickin's

This past moth has been pretty slim as far as actualy matches have been concerned.
Ian (Orks) and I(IG) played a 1250 rendition of Cut and Run (Battle Missions - Pg 62).
I realized that while my standard list method is effective, it's lacking in fun-factor.
that being said I started converting a second Leman Russ Punisher, and once it's painted, will be throwing 2 of those bad-boys on the table. Maybe I'll talk myself into throwing Pask into the new one, just to see what all the fuss is about.  Along with the Punisher comes plasma rifle conversions as well (plasma pistol + lasgun).
Looking forward to continuing through this campaign I've been playing with the group. I think i'm up against the local Ork king this time around. We'll see what happens there!

My quest for space wolves still continues. Life throws plenty of curve balls, unfortunately most of them seem to be directed at my wallet, haha! Their day will come, and when it does...

Special Mission - RE: Your Brains

RE: YOUR BRAINS
Your unit has been ordered to investigate a small urban center where communications have gone down.
High command orders your squad to spread out to discover more information quickly.  Well. You discover the information. This town is infested with Plague Zombies!

Special Mission - "The Meat Grinder"

THE MEAT GRINDER
War is underway. As in all conflicts, one of your primary objectives is to take away your enemies ability to wage war. Strike at the enemies troops. Kill their bodies to break their spirit.

Special Mission - "CRASH LANDING"

"CRASH LANDING"
In this special mission both players are attempting to locate and capture a damaged aircraft that is entering the planet's atmosphere. The aircraft could be owned by one of the sides or perhaps contains some valuable intel, technology or individual that each side wants to either capture or destroy. Conflict breaks out at the projected crash landing zone until the aircraft blazes in and crash lands at a random location on the board. Both sides will then scramble to get to the objective point and control it.

Close Combat Blob

Dear anyone who has ever said the Imperial Guard can't handle CC,

Commissar Yarrick + 5 Infantry Squads (combined) + Special Weapon Squad. The squads all have a Power Weapon on the Sarge. Toss Col Straken in there for funsies. What does that leave us with?
More than 50 infantry models? Yes. But what's better?
They all have furious charge.
Even better that that?

5 S7 I1 power fist attacks
20 S4 I4 power weapon attacks
87 S4 I4 attacks

They all get to re-roll any failed Hits.
Aww yeeeeeeeeeeee.
Toss a couple Flamers in the squads to soften up the target even further and sweet baby Jesus you got yourself a formidable CC force.

Thoughts?

ARMY LIST - "Extermination Detail"

Themed list I built this afternoon. I am trying to play more "fun" lists lately instead of purely competitively.
That being said, I have this 1750pt themed list "Extermination Detail" - affectionately named for it's weapon selection - Lot's of Flamers/Template weapons.
You will notice this is a dominantly anti-infantry list, obviously lacking in much (if any) AV14 clearance. Ordinarily that would be a problem, but in this case (as stated before) I'm going for the feel of the list not so much the "All Comers" effectiveness.
So without further yammering on my part, I give you the list.

From the Warp: What's my army missing?

Happened across this article the other day. Wise words, indeed.

From the Warp: What's my army missing?
(respectfully stolen from FTW)

"All the time I see articles listing how an army needs to have this or that or whatever included in it and if you don't, you'll never stand a chance at winning.

Sidhero vs Ironshot (IG vs Daemons) 5500pts

This past Saturday, Ironshot and myself went head to head - Apoc style.
This was my first ever apoc game as well as my first match against daemons..
I unfortunately was ill-equipped to do up a proper report, but can say that it was an exciting match-up.
I had a blast despite getting ripped to shreds turn after turn.

Free time

Busy week this week was.

Working on a couple new conversion while I try to pass the time waiting for the Sons of Russ to get to my door.  Going to try to knock out 2 Leman Russ Demolisher conversions before my big fight with the Daemons (5500 pts).
Played a quick match with my brother's Orks a couple of nights ago, will post the report soon.

Until then...

Growing a beard...

It only seems appropriate whit an incoming Space Wolves army.
I've been doing a lot of reading and I think I have come up with my shopping list. Really trying to go "fluffy" with the Woofies.

Inaguration Day

Welcome to GETS HOT.
This site will be dedicated to modeling, painting, converting, collecting and of course (most importantly) PLAYING.  Battle reports, army lists, community updates - you name it!
Stick around.
